The
celebration of Bengali New Year is also known as” Nababarsha” and “Pohela Baishakh”.
The word “Naba” means “New” and the word “Barsha” means “Year”. Thus,
“Nababarsha” means “New Year” in Bengali language. It is a part and parcel
of culture. It is the first day of Bengali New Year, in the Bengali Calendar.
Our people observe this day with great festivities. The Baishakhi Mela which is
celebrated is perhaps the largest festival of Bengali culture. People from all
walks of life join this festival in joyous mood. Urban people try to keep a while
away from their blind mimicry of western culture and tend to be a Bengali at
least this day. In the village people
pass the day meeting one another, giving and receiving invitations, enjoying
music etc. by local performers and doing many other festive deeds. Business men
open new books of account this very day which is known as Halkhata. Thus Bengali
New Year comes with great festivity.
